EVENING

The sun gave up its fight and dipped below the horizon but it did little to reduce the humidity and heat.

Another darkness crept forward, consuming the island.

It moved slowly, closer to the people who trespassed on its land.

There was no more time to wait.

It was ready to take.

Ready to swallow.

Ready to kill.

Deborah slowly opened her eyes and looked around. For a moment, she couldn’t recall where she was or why she was lying down.

It hurt to swallow, and she felt a pinching sensation in her arm.

Turning her head slowly to one side, the room came into focus, and she could see that she was lying down in an infirmary. Bottles and cotton swabs surrounded a metal sink.

The air smelled antiseptic, and yet Deborah quickly determined that she wasn’t in a hospital.

“Hello?” she called.

In the distance she could hear someone shuffling across the floor.

“Oh, someone’s finally decided to join us.”

A gentle Bahamian voice drifted toward her, as a large, pleasant-faced woman came close. She wore a typical nurse’s uniform. The name on her lapel said MARIE.

Deborah instantly felt reassured.

“What happened?” she croaked, temporarily forgetting how she had ended up in an infirmary bed.

Chuckling, Marie reached out, smoothing down the white blanket wrapped around Deborah’s body.

“We’re not exactly sure. Miguel, our beach bartender, saw you lying on the ground not far from here. You must have gone into the woods on the northern side of the island because none of the staff members saw you walk up from the bungalows. Did you get lost?”

Deborah closed her eyes and suddenly, everything came back to her …

Wandering the woods …

Searching for Tamika …

Getting lost …

… and her stomach erupting in pain.

“Got lost,” was all she could muster. Her stomach was no longer hurting, but everything seemed hazy and strange.

“Poor child,” Marie murmured. “You’re very dehydrated. Who wouldn’t be after wandering around without any water in this heat? This IV drip will help get you back into shape. You’ve got to rest. I’ll keep an eye on you.”

She watched as her patient fell back asleep.

Closing the curtain to give Deborah some privacy, Marie made her way back to Dan who was also asleep after getting a moderate dose of intravenous Valium.

The nurse was very worried. Two of the guests were now in her care and from what she could gather from bits and pieces of gossip, the other guests were missing.

No one could find Jalen either.

Sighing heavily, Marie promised herself to remain calm. She needed to be in good shape for her patients and couldn’t let the heat and stress get to her.

Sitting in a nearby chair, she opened her medical log and began to document Deborah’s condition.

Ulysses was a stickler for protocol but wondered why he was forcing his team to make the evening meal when it was clear that people weren’t going to attend.

For starters, he knew that now there were two guests in the infirmary. The other guests were nowhere to be seen. That had delayed the plans to have a staff meeting.
